Basketball 10,000

“Studies suggest that the key to success in any field has nothing to do with talent. It’s simply practice, 10,000 hours of it — 20 hours a week for 10 years.” (Time Magazine on M. Gladwell quote) Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers makes any dedicated athlete, student, or business person question how the greats got where they are and how that work ethic might impact our lives.

Lynette Woodard shared with me a shooting program called GOAL 10,000, written by Rick McNabb (Hoopsters/Lawrence, KS). Coach McNabb obviously felt strongly about the concept of this magic number, 10,000. His work has inspired me to consider the awesome mentality of teaching with an ultimate, long-term numerical goal in mind and how to objectify repetition.

BASKETBALL 10,000 is most influenced by Hall of Famer, Lynette Woodard, one of the finest ball handlers of our time, perhaps all-time. I have seen her place hours of emphasis with her young athletes in training to the Olympic prospect to continue those figure 8’s, candy canes, and shin-splits.

BASKETBALL 10,000 is about basketball handling “touches.”

Hundreds of young athletes have been introduced to this program. Basketball 1000 is a form with 10 different ball handling exercises. Completing 8 to 10 Basketball 1000 forms, a dedicated player can accomplish BASKETBALL 10,000; that’s 10,000 touches of ball handling, working toward a more confident basketball athlete.
